There is no news and nothing to congratulate him on that he did not do standing right beside you. What is left is the year itself, and whether you can say anything about it that is true and is not word for word what you wrote last time. The usual mistake is reaching for a grand statement, because an anniversary is not built out of statements. It is built out of a very large number of ordinary mornings, and the card that lands is the one that names a specific one. Who starts the car when it is cold. The drive he does every time without ever being asked. The messages below are written from a wife to her husband in a plain voice rather than a big one, and they are sorted by where you actually are: short lines for the card, the first few years, twenty-five, forty and fifty, a year that took more than it gave, something to send in the middle of his working day, and a few words for the table.

Toggle

Short lines for the card

The first years, before there is much history to point at

Twenty-five years — silver

Forty and fifty — ruby and golden

A message to send in the middle of his working day

After a year that took more than it gave

A few words to say at dinner

Questions and answers

Short lines for the card

1
Another year in this house, and I would still pick the same person to be in it with. There have been years when I was hard work and he stayed anyway, and years when he was hard work and I did the same, and neither of us has ever produced a receipt. To us.

Questions and answers

This is the first anniversary since the shape of the house changed — the kids moved out, he retired, one of us stopped working. Does the card get into that?

Name it once, in the past tense, and then spend the rest of the card on what did not change. A card built entirely around the new arrangement turns the anniversary into a status review of something the two of you are already discussing every day, and the date has a different job: it is the one thing in the year that points at continuity. So: one plain sentence about the change, then the ordinary evidence — the same seat, the same argument, the same person through the same door. Leave out any forecast about how the new arrangement will go, because a prediction in ink becomes something to be measured against later, and, if the change was his rather than yours, any assessment of how he is handling it.

He is away on the day — a shift, a trip, a job out of town. Does the card wait until he is back?

Something has to land on the actual date, and the card is not the thing that does it. Send a message on the day, timed to when he can genuinely read it rather than to midnight, and keep the card for when he is home, where it gets opened properly instead of in a truck. The split works because the two objects do different jobs: the message marks the date, the card is the thing that gets kept. If he is away for longer, put the card in his bag before he goes and say nothing, because found later beats handed over. The version people regret is moving the occasion to the following weekend and letting the date pass with nothing on it.

Do you still write I love you in an anniversary card, or is it assumed after this many years?

Write it, and write it last. Its being assumed is exactly why it works — nobody in a long marriage is waiting for the information, they are waiting to see whether you will still bother to put it down. What makes it land flat is being the only thing in the card, because then it reads as the minimum rather than as a conclusion. Put a fact in front of it: something he did this year, one ordinary thing he does that you have never once mentioned. Then the closing line arrives as a verdict on evidence instead of as a formula. Shorter is better, and the same three words every year is a tradition rather than a rut.

We say everything out loud already. What is left for a card to do?

Become the record. Speech does not survive: neither of you will be able to quote a single sentence either of you said this year, and both of you could find a card from a decade ago in about four minutes. That is the whole function, and it means the card should not be trying to be new. Write the thing you say most often, in the words you actually use, and put the date on it. A run of cards that all say roughly the same thing in slightly different years is not repetitive — it is the only continuous document a marriage produces. The one addition worth making each year is a single concrete detail from the twelve months just gone.

The hard part of this year was us, not something that happened to us. Does the card say so?

Not the card. There is a real difference between a year that hurt you both and a year in which the two of you hurt each other, and only the first belongs on a page he opens at a table. A card is the worst possible venue for opening something, because he can neither answer it nor be seen not answering it, and the date decides the timing instead of either of you. Write the part you can stand behind without qualification — that you are still here, that you intend to keep going — and have the rest of it on an ordinary evening with nothing attached. If nothing true will fit, an honest short card beats a warm long one.

The hard part of an anniversary card is that the man opening it already knows everything inside it.
