Wedding anniversary wishes for your husband — short lines for the card, the first years, silver, ruby and golden, and a message to send during his day

The hard part of an anniversary card is that the man opening it already knows everything inside it. There is no news and nothing to congratulate him on that he did not do standing right beside you. What is left is the year itself, and whether you can say anything about it that is true and is not word for word what you wrote last time. The usual mistake is reaching for a grand statement, because an anniversary is not built out of statements. It is built out of a very large number of ordinary mornings, and the card that lands is the one that names a specific one. Who starts the car when it is cold. The drive he does every time without ever being asked. The messages below are written from a wife to her husband in a plain voice rather than a big one, and they are sorted by where you actually are: short lines for the card, the first few years, twenty-five, forty and fifty, a year that took more than it gave, something to send in the middle of his working day, and a few words for the table.

Short lines for the card

1

Another year in this house, and I would still pick the same person to be in it with. Happy anniversary.

2

Happy anniversary. None of this was luck and I would like that on the record.

3

To the man who starts the car before I am even awake. Here is to another year of it.

4

Happy anniversary. I have never once had to reconsider.

5

One more year on the count, and not a single one of them wasted. Happy anniversary.

6

Still the best company in an empty house. Happy anniversary.

7

Whatever this year decides to do, I already know who I am doing it with. Happy anniversary.

8

Happy anniversary to the calmest person in any room I have ever stood in.

9

Another year of you in the next room. I would not trade the arrangement for anything.

10

Happy anniversary. Same plan as last year: you, and nothing else scheduled.

11

Thank you for the ordinary days. There have been a great many and I have liked all of them.

12

I still hear the door and know it is you before I look up. Happy anniversary.

13

To the two of us, and to another year of exactly the same. Happy anniversary.

The first years, before there is much history to point at

1

One year, and most of it was logistics — a lease, a car, whose family gets which weekend, and a very long conversation about a couch. It was a good year anyway. Happy first anniversary, and thank you for handling the boring half of it.

2

Two years, and we have worked out roughly who is good at what. You take anything that requires a phone call and I take anything that requires a decision by Friday. It is a functioning arrangement. Happy anniversary.

3

Three years, and what I did not expect is how much of a marriage turns out to be small negotiations nobody outside the house would understand. We have settled most of them in your favour and I have no complaints. Happy anniversary.

4

Five years today. Long enough that the wedding is genuinely in the past, short enough that I still remember exactly what the drive home from it felt like. Happy anniversary — I would do the whole thing again in the same order.

5

Four years, one apartment, one house, two jobs between us and one winter with no furnace. You were steady through every part of that and I was not, and I did notice. Happy anniversary.

6

The early years are supposed to be the easy ones. Ours have been busy rather than easy, and you have been good company through all of it, which is the part I did not know to ask for. Happy anniversary.

7

A year ago I would have told you I knew what I was doing. I did not, and neither did you, and we have got a good deal further than either of us expected on that basis. Here is to guessing well again. Happy anniversary.

Twenty-five years — silver

1

Twenty-five years today, and what stays with me is not the big occasions. It is the number of times I have come through a door and found you already dealing with whatever it was. Happy silver anniversary.

2

Twenty-five years, three houses, two of them with a basement neither of us should have taken on, and I would do all three again. Happy anniversary.

3

Happy silver anniversary. A quarter of a century, and the record shows you have never once let a bad week of mine turn into a bad week for both of us. I have not always managed the same. Thank you for that.

4

Twenty-five years and people ask what the trick is. There is no trick. You have shown up every day and done the unglamorous half without being asked, and it turns out that is the entire thing. Happy anniversary.

5

Silver, then. What I want to mark today is that we have got through two rounds of teenagers, one long illness in the family and a stretch of work that took far more out of you than you ever said. Still here. Happy anniversary.

6

Happy anniversary. Twenty-five years, and what I would tell anybody who asked is that you are much harder to rattle than I am, and that a marriage needs at least one of those. Thank you for being it.

7

A quarter of a century, and my favourite part of it is still the drive home from anywhere — the two of us going back over the evening, agreeing about most of it, and getting in far too late. Happy silver anniversary.

Forty and fifty — ruby and golden

1

Forty years. Still here, still yours, still arguing about the route. Happy ruby anniversary.

2

Happy ruby anniversary. Forty years, and I have watched you be reliable in about nine separate emergencies without once making a thing of it afterwards. That is the marriage, as far as I can tell.

3

Forty years ago I married a man who warned me he was no good at talking about any of this. That part has held. Everything else about him turned out to be considerably better than advertised. Happy anniversary.

4

Fifty years married. The grandchildren think we have always been like this, and not one of them has any idea how much of it was work. You did more of that work than I did. Happy golden anniversary.

5

Happy golden anniversary. Fifty years, and we still have not settled the argument we started in the first month. I have no intention of settling it now. Here is to carrying it a while longer.

6

Forty years, and I have stopped being able to tell which of my opinions started out as yours. I have decided not to look into it. Happy ruby anniversary, and thank you for the good ones.

7

Fifty years, and the number is doing all the talking today, so I will keep mine short. You have been steady for half a century and I have leaned on it the entire time. Happy golden anniversary.

A message to send in the middle of his working day

1

Happy anniversary. Nothing needed at your end. I just did not want the whole day to go by without it being said.

2

Thinking about the drive home after the wedding and how neither of us said a word for the first half hour. Happy anniversary. See you tonight.

3

Happy anniversary. Whatever you were planning to pick up on the way home, do not. Come home instead.

4

Sending this before the day takes over. Same answer as the first time. Happy anniversary.

5

There is food at home and no plan beyond that. Come when you are done. Happy anniversary.

6

Happy anniversary. I have been thinking about the year we had nothing at all and it was still fine.

7

It occurred to me on the way in this morning that I have now known you longer than I have not. Happy anniversary.

8

Happy anniversary. I hope the day is easy on you. I will be the one at the table at the end of it.

9

No card yet, no gift yet, no plan yet. There is, however, a very firm intention. Happy anniversary.

10

Whatever the day throws at you, it is a good date and I am glad of it. Happy anniversary.

11

I have spent an entire meeting thinking about the fact that we did this on purpose. Happy anniversary.

12

Happy anniversary. Drive carefully. That is the whole message and it has been the whole message for years.

After a year that took more than it gave

1

A hard year does not get a better card, it gets an honest one. Here is mine: I watched you get up and do the necessary thing every single morning of it, including the mornings you had nothing left. Thank you. Happy anniversary.

2

Most of this year went on things neither of us chose. What I noticed, over and over, is that you never once made any of it heavier than it already was. That is a specific kind of decency and it is not common. Happy anniversary.

3

Happy anniversary. Today feels more like a formality than a celebration and I am marking it anyway, because a run of years should not have a gap in it just because one of them was difficult.

4

No plans this year and no energy for any, which is fine. What I want written down is that in the worst stretch of it I never once wondered whether you would still be there. Happy anniversary.

5

Some years are simply endured, and this was one. You endured it without turning it on anybody, least of all me. That is not a small thing and I want it on the record. Happy anniversary.

6

I would like next year to be dull. Nothing dramatic, nothing to manage, no phone calls at strange hours — just the two of us and a great many ordinary evenings. That is the whole wish. Happy anniversary.

7

The card I would have written last year is not the card I am writing now, and that is all right. We have been through a version of this before and come out the other side of it. Happy anniversary — I am still glad it is you.

A few words to say at dinner

1

Two sentences and then I will sit down, because you hate this and everybody here knows it. The thing worth saying out loud is that very little about the last stretch was easy and almost none of it felt hard, and that is entirely down to how you are in a house. To us.

2

Before the plates arrive. I did not marry a man who talks about any of this, so I will do the talking. He has been steady for longer than half the people at this table have been alive, and I have built everything I have on top of that. To him.

3

One thing and then we can go back to normal. Everybody here has a story about him turning up with a truck, a ladder or a set of tools at an inconvenient hour, and nobody has ever heard him mention it afterwards. That is the man. Happy anniversary.

4

A word before anybody eats. The two of us have been asked what the secret is more times than I can count, and the honest answer is dull: we like each other, and we have gone on liking each other through the years when there was no particular reason to. To another one of those.

5

I was asked to say something and I am going to say the true one rather than the polished one. There have been years when I was hard work and he stayed anyway, and years when he was hard work and I did the same, and neither of us has ever produced a receipt. To us.

Questions and answers

This is the first anniversary since the shape of the house changed — the kids moved out, he retired, one of us stopped working. Does the card get into that?

Name it once, in the past tense, and then spend the rest of the card on what did not change. A card built entirely around the new arrangement turns the anniversary into a status review of something the two of you are already discussing every day, and the date has a different job: it is the one thing in the year that points at continuity. So: one plain sentence about the change, then the ordinary evidence — the same seat, the same argument, the same person through the same door. Leave out any forecast about how the new arrangement will go, because a prediction in ink becomes something to be measured against later, and, if the change was his rather than yours, any assessment of how he is handling it.

He is away on the day — a shift, a trip, a job out of town. Does the card wait until he is back?

Something has to land on the actual date, and the card is not the thing that does it. Send a message on the day, timed to when he can genuinely read it rather than to midnight, and keep the card for when he is home, where it gets opened properly instead of in a truck. The split works because the two objects do different jobs: the message marks the date, the card is the thing that gets kept. If he is away for longer, put the card in his bag before he goes and say nothing, because found later beats handed over. The version people regret is moving the occasion to the following weekend and letting the date pass with nothing on it.

Do you still write I love you in an anniversary card, or is it assumed after this many years?

Write it, and write it last. Its being assumed is exactly why it works — nobody in a long marriage is waiting for the information, they are waiting to see whether you will still bother to put it down. What makes it land flat is being the only thing in the card, because then it reads as the minimum rather than as a conclusion. Put a fact in front of it: something he did this year, one ordinary thing he does that you have never once mentioned. Then the closing line arrives as a verdict on evidence instead of as a formula. Shorter is better, and the same three words every year is a tradition rather than a rut.

We say everything out loud already. What is left for a card to do?

Become the record. Speech does not survive: neither of you will be able to quote a single sentence either of you said this year, and both of you could find a card from a decade ago in about four minutes. That is the whole function, and it means the card should not be trying to be new. Write the thing you say most often, in the words you actually use, and put the date on it. A run of cards that all say roughly the same thing in slightly different years is not repetitive — it is the only continuous document a marriage produces. The one addition worth making each year is a single concrete detail from the twelve months just gone.

The hard part of this year was us, not something that happened to us. Does the card say so?

Not the card. There is a real difference between a year that hurt you both and a year in which the two of you hurt each other, and only the first belongs on a page he opens at a table. A card is the worst possible venue for opening something, because he can neither answer it nor be seen not answering it, and the date decides the timing instead of either of you. Write the part you can stand behind without qualification — that you are still here, that you intend to keep going — and have the rest of it on an ordinary evening with nothing attached. If nothing true will fit, an honest short card beats a warm long one.
