TOP parks in Montreal: 10 verified venues

Montréal is an island, and its parks are read through water and relief first. Parc du Mont-Royal wraps the 233-metre summit the city built itself around; Parc Jean-Drapeau spreads over two islands in the river, one of them raised out of the water in ten months for the 1967 world’s fair; Parc-nature de l’Île-de-la-Visitation runs past mill ruins three centuries old; and Parc René-Lévesque reaches almost two kilometres into lac Saint-Louis along a man-made jetty. Elsewhere the ground is flat and history supplies the landscape: a military parade ground at Parc La Fontaine, the first major-league ballpark outside the United States at Parc Jarry.

After that they diverge by scale, canopy and distance. Parc-nature du Cap-Saint-Jacques covers 330 hectares of forest, working farm fields and lakeshore beach at the western tip of the island; Parc Jeanne-Mance has fourteen, every one of them programmed, facing the mountain. Choose by the trip and by the season: some of these are one metro station from the centre, others a long bus ride out, and winter here is a full season rather than a gap.

Questions & answers

Which place has the most reviews? Parc du Mont-Royal — 26751 visitor reviews.

With a toddler, go flat: Parc Jarry sets wading pool, play modules and open lawns on ground with no slope, and Parc La Fontaine crosses easily with a stroller. For running, the chemin Olmsted in Parc du Mont-Royal climbs eight kilometres of soft gravel at an even grade; the loop at Parc Maisonneuve gives three kilometres without a single intersection. Water varies: supervised swimming at Parc-nature du Cap-Saint-Jacques, pedal boats on the mountain lake, a circuit of the water at Parc Angrignon, whose maple stand holds shade in a heat wave and silence at dawn.

Be honest about the edges. Seven of these parks sit within reach of the centre; the western tip, the rivière des Prairies and Lachine get one apiece. Nothing here maps cycling routes between parks, or the rules for dogs outside the fenced runs, or what stays lit after dark — at Parc Angrignon only a 1.6-kilometre stretch does. Wheelchair access is settled only for the chemin Olmsted and the main paths of Parc La Fontaine.
